"I go to 'Nature' to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order."    John Burroughs

Helen was born and educated in Charleston, South Carolina, where she and her husband still live.  She has spent her life riding and training horses, teaching horseback riding and, more recently, painting in oils.

"My first foray into painting at age 54 was pure serendipity.  An accomplished artist and dear friend set up an easel next to hers and put a brush in my hand.  It was magic.  Time disappeared.  My world changed in that moment and I have been in love with the process ever since.

The natural beauty and complexity of our world and its creatures inspire me, and the fragility of the same compels me to try to capture it in paint.  Oil paint is the medium I use and I find it forgiving and versatile.  I like to paint outdoors whenever possible... in friendly weather!  Usually, after walking awhile and looking closely, a subject will grab my attention with its shapes, colors or depth of light, and I will feel an urge to translate it into paint."
